I'm not a dermatologist, but I know lots of docs and have worked with lots of docs.

To become a dermatologist, you will first attend four years of college, taking the MCATs senior year, majoring in pre-med, or a science, or another area but including all the science/math pre-requisites for med school admission.

You then take four years of medical school, during which you will do clerkships and clinical rotations through the various medical specialty areas. You will also begin taking the multi-part National Board exams. During the fourth year, you will sign up for the national match program, to be matched with an internship [one year, optional for some specialties] or a residency [3-5 years or more, depending on specialty].

After residency, you may elect to do a fellowship to further specialize.

Medical school is quite expensive [no scholarships to speak of], difficult to get into and difficult to finish.

For internship and residency [and fellowship], you will be paid [modestly] and work 80-hour weeks, with 24-36-hour on-call rotations [where you usually stay in the hospital and, hopefully, get some sleep, too].

Good luck - it's a long, arduous, expensive road, but very rewarding, too.
