When i went to the dermatologist she used a magnify glass with a light on it, it depends what you're seeing one for.

visual inspection scrapings can be made for lab analysis if necessary but it will not hurt so go
at first a naked eye, a tool if need be afterwards.
My dermatologist uses a large magnifying glass and/or magnifying eyeglasses and goes slowly and thoroughly over my entire body.
