Dermatologists can subspecialize into adult medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, surgical/laser dermatology, cosmetic dermatology. In the first two, you can (or not) do surgery, if you want to. Otherwise, you can diagnose and treat medically, and send the surgical cases to a colleague. So far, it sounds OK, right? However, to get your dermatology certificate, you'll need to get your M.D. degree, meaning that you have to complete medical school, which means that you'll have to do some surgical rotations. In addition, to pass your dermatology board exams, you have to complete the dermatology residency program, which entails several months of surgery.
